Being an on-line travel resource we are regularly asked our opinion on various hotels. The problem is that although we have stayed at many hotels ranging from hostels to 5 star luxury we find that what we like does not necessarily mean you will like it.
In fact we have stayed at hotels in Cancun Mexico we thought were total dumps but if you read the reviews in some of the on-line review resources, the hotel gets rave reviews.
Reading hotel reviews is like judging an Olympic diving event. Eliminate the super great reviews and the really bad ones then go with the consensus. Cross reference with other review sites.
